Goverment House,

Hongkong, 31st May, 1902.

I have the honour to request your ruling

as to whether the word 'salary' in Clause 1 of the Pension

Minute of 1st January, 1902, is to be construed as in Clause

13 of the Minute.

A case has recently arisen here in which

an Indian Assistant Warder in the Gaol whose salary was $18 a

month claimed

to have included in his salary for pension

purposes the value of his free quarters.

As there was some doubt in the matter I

have granted a pension to the Warder in question

Warris Khan -

who served formerly in the Police Force and is now invalided

owing to ill health, but I should be glad to have your decision

on the point for future guidance.

The Pension papers relative to the case I

have mentioned are attached for your information.

I have the honour to be, Sir,

Your most obedient

Humble servant,

M.J. Gascoigne

Major-General,

Administering the Government.

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.,
